A new group called the Tasmanian Climate Collective has formed to ensure climate change remains a significant issue in the lead up to the Federal Election. The group is an amalgamation of several existing climate change, social and environmental grassroots organisations.
Tasmanian Climate Collective formed ahead of federal election
The group formed in response to the Federal Election and will ensure that action on climate change remains on the political agenda in the lead up to polling day. The group will also raise awareness of the issue with voters and will encourage people to vote for parties with strong climate policies.
The group will be holding a rally at 12–1pm on the 7 May 2022, where large crowds will be filling Parliament Lawns to hear speeches from farmers, doctors, indigenous Tasmanians and scientists on the importance of climate action. The Tasmanian Climate Collective will also be producing a climate scorecard which ranks candidates on their climate policies.
“We have decided for our groups to combine efforts to encourage our political leaders to urgently adopt stronger climate policies.” said Tasmanian Climate Collective spokesperson Dr Jennifer Sanger. “How else can we compete with the massive influence of the coal, oil and gas corporate donations to the Liberal/National Parties. We don’t have their cash but we have the passion that comes with fighting for our children’s future.”
“Climate change is the number one threat to society, the environment and humanity and we won’t stop until we see strong climate change policies. We will use our united voice through the Tasmanian Climate Collective to ensure real action on climate change happens”, said Dr Jennifer Sanger. “The decarbonisation of energy is a massive opportunity for Australia. Strong climate policy brings investment in Tasmania and creates jobs — in a safer future.”
The group will keep campaigning on climate change issues post federal election.
